So many practitioners wonder if Functional Medicine is within their scope of practice. I know how you feel – I felt the same way 10 years ago. What I found was that Functional Medicine is simply a different way of thinking, and it is within everyone’s scope of practice.
Who Can Practice Functional Medicine?
Doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, mental health professionals and other health practitioners can all adopt this way of thinking and systemized approach.
In fact, I believe if you don’t have the Functional Medicine way of thinking, it is like trying to find and treat your patient in a dark room. You end up just treating symptoms while being blind to the true underlying root causes.
To get started, you need these two key things:
- The Functional Medicine systemized approach
- A thinking that helps you connect the data gathered in a systemized approach to develop a personalized Functional Medicine Plan of Care
What Patients Really Care About
In my experience, patients never asked me what course I did or what letters were behind my name. Instead, they asked:
- Can you give me more information?
- How do we go about doing that?
- When can we get started?
I am still amazed at the thirst for knowledge and understanding from patients. People are desperate for a genuine solution. When you combine Functional Medicine with your existing skillset, you have a magic formula.
Functional Medicine is not a “one symptom, one medication” paradigm. It’s about being a detective – establishing a relationship with your patient and gaining trust as you go through a step-by-step approach to determine the root cause of their problems.
Start offering that genuine solution with a new way of thinking to get extraordinary patient outcomes.
